Step Up offers professionals working within the performing arts a personal mentor and 6-8 mentoring sessions. It is an opportunity for analysis, reflection and action to enable you to achieve success in your work. This scheme is for individuals from all areas of the performing arts – artistic development, management, audience development, production, technical, education, etc.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Successful applicants will be matched with a mentor, who will work with you:
· In 6 to 8 one to one confidential meetings from January to November 2017
· Giving time to reflect on your working practice, achievements and aims
· Supporting you with your work developments, projects and role
· Developing your self awareness, confidence and skills, to enhance your performance
Your mentor will work on the principle that you are inherently talented, resourceful and creative and able to resolve issues when you understand them and know how to change them.
In confidential sessions you will be able to ‘think aloud’ and talk through strategies to reach new understandings and insights into your situation. In addition, specific expertise and experience is available from mentors to accelerate acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, for example, in undertaking a new role, and / or fulfilling a project or task.
All FST mentors are experienced and respected arts professionals who give their time freely to participate in the programme. Our mentors come from a wide range of areas – producing, general management, marketing, technical and artistic roles. Each year 9 new mentors are selected and they receive 3 days intensive training in mentoring skills in October–November before taking on 2 mentees in January. In addition we have existing mentors who often agree to support a new mentee after their initial commitment of one year. These mentors receive training each year to ensure that their skills are up to date.
We use the information that you provide us in your application to match you with the most appropriate mentor for you. This may be someone who comes from a similar job area as you but not always. Our mentors have a wide range of skills and not all are directly related to their job role. In some cases it may be more appropriate for you to be matched with someone from a different area because of the support that they can offer.
We aim to ensure that individuals are matched with the most approriate mentor for your specific needs. The matching process involves many people and therefore it may not be possible to offer you an alternative mentor if you cannot accept the person you have been matched with for any reason.
MENTEE INDUCTION SESSION
We require all mentees to attend a short induction session on 2 December from 10am- noon. The session will be facilitated by Step Up co-founder Abigail Carney, who will be joined by Jon Morgan, Director (FST) and Emma Beatt, Training and Professional Development Manager (FST) and one of our mentors. The induction session is an opportunity for you to find out more about the programme and ask any questions that you may have. Attending this session will help you to get the most out of your experience as a mentee.
