Parents in Performing Arts (PIPA), has announced the findings of their Best Practice Research Project and launched the trial of the PIPA Best Practice Charter, which sets out conditions to help theatre organisations become more carer-friendly for workers.
The Best Practice Charter is the result of the research study in partnership with 15 leading UK theatre organisations and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. The research revealed that 4 out of 5 freelancers had turned down work because of caring responsibilities.
PIPA are encouraging theatre organisations across the UK to sign up to the Charter, which will be tested for the first year, to help them ensure that places of work – and access to work – become as inclusive and accessible as possible to carers and parents. The guidelines cover casting, staff recruitment, monitoring and changes to working conditions and practices: organisations who meet Best Practice Charter conditions will be awarded a PIPA kite mark.
