Workforce Survey

The State of Play Workforce Survey aims to provide a vital profile of the Scottish Performing Arts Sector, to gather further information and data on sector demographics; employment trends and issues; and, to give crucial information on individuals experiences working and volunteering in the sector.

About the Survey

Aims of the Workforce Survey
This survey aims to provide a detailed profile of our sector’s demographics; employment trends and issues; and, give crucial information on people’s experience of working and volunteering in the sector.

Who should complete the Workforce Survey?
Everyone working and volunteering in the professional performing arts* in Scotland is invited to complete this survey, including freelancers, employed staff on a temporary or permanent, full-time or part-time basis and anyone who volunteers in the sector, including board members. 

You do not have to be an FST Member to complete the survey.

*We are defining performing arts, in line with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport definition as ‘all forms of theatre, dance, musicals and opera performances’ and also creative education, participation, artistic creation and governance.   

Can I share the survey?
YES, please do.
We want the survey to be as representative of the sector as possible and would encourage you to forward the survey link or any FST emails to peers and colleagues who may not hold membership.

What to expect in completing the survey:
Outlined below is a short overview of the process of taking the survey. If you have any questions whilst taking it you can also get in touch with us at stateofplay@scottishtheatre.org

Survey site: When you click on the survey link you will be taken to an external survey site to complete the survey online.

Time to complete: The workforce survey should take around 15-30 minutes to complete, you are also able to save your progress and complete it in stages to come back to it over time. 

Deadline for responses: Tuesday 31 August 2021

Survey Structure: There are 6 sections to complete in the Workforce Survey.

1. Your role/ position in the performing arts
2. Experiences of working in the performing arts
3. Equality & Diversity in the performing arts
4. Combatting Abuse
5. Impact of the Covid-19 and looking to the future
6. An optional section on awareness and experiences of Fair Work, Equalities practice, Climate Action, and the role of Federation of Scottish Theatre.

Can I view the whole survey before I fill it in?
Yes, you can.
