Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for all persons within a workplace and would be particularly useful for anyone who holds a supervisory/managerial level position and who has responsibility for implementing a positive mental health culture and responsibility for First Aid for Mental Health within an organisation.

Course Description

•    Provide an overview of what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for Mental Health.
•    Understand how to start a conversation and provide practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition.
•    How to recognise and effectively manage stress.
•    Understand the effects of drugs and alcohol on mental health
•    How to effectively use the First Aid for Mental Health action plan
•    How to influence a mentally positive culture in the workplace
•    Understand a range of mental health disorders and the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers (Depression, PTSD, Suicide, Personality Disorders, Psychosis, Anxiety, Self-harm, Eating disorders, Bipolar, Schizophrenia)

Day 1 - 2.5 hour live online Zoom-guided learning session:
Module 1 – An introduction to the Qualification
Module 2 – What is First Aid for Mental Health?
Module 3 – Identifying mental health conditions and early signs
Module 4 – How to provide support and starting a conversation
Module 5 – Recognising and managing stress

Day 2 - 2.5 hour live online Zoom-guided learning session:
Module 6 – The impact of Drugs and alcohol on mental health
Module 7 – First Aid Action Plan for mental health
Module 8 – Mental health in the workplace
Module 9 –  Depression
Module 10 – Anxiety
Module 11 – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Day 2 - 2.5 hour live online Zoom-guided learning session:
Module 12 – Self-harm
Module 13 – Suicide
Module 14 – Eating disorders
Module 15 – Personality disorders
Module 16 – Bipolar disorder
Module 17 – Psychosis
Module 18 – Schizophrenia


One-to-one assessment conducted online via Zoom with your tutor which takes up to 1 hour.

If you undertake the Assessment you will gain a qualification in either:
•    RQF Level 3 Award: FAA Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)
•    SCQF Level 6 Award: Award in Leading First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 6
Qualification is valid for three years from the date of completion.
