Established Artists Residency (January 2023) – Surge

Surge is looking for established artists or small groups of collaborating artists, who have the seed of an idea for a piece of work specifically designed for the outdoors. Your idea can be of any scale from solo work to a mass participatory spectacle. Equally, your idea can be for any outdoor setting from an urban walkabout to a sculptural soundscape at the peak of a mountain.

Importantly the idea should be in its infancy, the residency is designed to explore the themes, stories, practicalities, and audience experience before entering the ‘making’ stage of a project.

The residency will be led by Hilary Westlake, Alan Richardson, Kevin Finnan MBE and other mentors TBC dependent on the specialisms of the chosen applications.

  • Applications are welcome from collaborating artists, but no more than three per group.
  • Applications are encouraged from collaborators in differing art forms and specialisms.
  • Applications are encouraged from collaborators working in digital arts.
  • UK-wide and international applications are welcome, some places are reserved for Scotland-based practitioners.

Applicants should:
Have a body of professional work behind them in their respective artform or specialism.
Have an idea for the creation of a new outdoor arts piece.
The idea should be at an early stage of development.

Surge will provide:
Experienced mentors to lead the residency.
A structured residency in a rural location in Scotland.
A balanced group of established artists representing a wide variety of projects.
Transport from Glasgow to the residency location.
Accommodation and food for the duration of the residency.
