Dance North Scotland

Dance North Scotland is at the vanguard of contemporary dance - promoting and producing bold and imaginative events that offer people from across the globe to just down the road the opportunity to experience dance. Our reputation is built upon a potent combination of risk taking, quality and a commitment to challenging expectations. Whether it’s introducing rural audiences to trailblazing contemporary dance, supporting experimental dance practices, or initiating local community dance and social care activities; we see ourselves as leaders in our field. The organisation has a strong regional, national and international profile as an independent arts organisation and a sixteen-year track record of presenting successful performances and workshops by acclaimed inter/national dance artists, in this beautiful and remote part of Scotland.

We work hard to break down the barriers that so often prevent people from attending and participating in dance events. We seek to programme artists who take active steps to consider and promote access and inclusion within their work and, in turn, operate with due regard - using our best endeavours to ensure that our events are as accessible as possible and aiming to meet the needs of both existing and potential audiences.

Established in 2003, Dance North has over fifteen years’ experience promoting and producing contemporary dance performances, workshops and events that inspire communities to partake in and experience dance. There are three main strands to our activities: our participatory and workshop programme, our performance programme, and our professional training and development programme.

As a Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) account-managed social enterprise, we work towards our mission with the support of both grant and earned income. Our recent move to become a Community Interest Company in 2017 highlights the fact that the majority of Dance North Scotland’s output is for the benefit of our local community, which has been further consolidated by our successful application to Creative Scotland for Regularly Funded Organisation status.
