Think Circus CIC
Think Circus CIC is a social enterprise based in Leith, founded in 2016. We bring circus arts to communities across Scotland and run regular classes for families and women in Leith, with our mission being to build supportive communities through circus, for a healthier, happier society. Our work as a social circus brings performances, workshops and interactive experiences to communities experiencing multiple deprivation, with these being subsidised by our provision of performances to events, festivals and corporate hospitality. Lived experience of circus transforming the relationship to our physical selves and building self-trust and resilience informs all of our work.
Our work has three strands: Performance, Learning and Community
Performance: our shows and roaming performers reached thousands of people in 2018 and 2019, with successful commissions created for the Glasgow West End Festival, the Torchlit Procession, Newhailes House and Irvine Harbour Festival. We often incorporate music, clowning, storytelling and theatre with circus, and reflect Scottish culture. Our Torchlit Procession Fire Theatre show featured themes of Scottish enlightenment and opposing ideologies. Our shows are notable for blending circus with clear themes, socially relevant content, and the use of spoken word to drive narrative.
Learning: taught classes are an integral part of our offering, as we believe circus is for all bodies and usually pair up performances with a chance to try skills. We have taught online courses throughout the last six months on a pay-what-you-can afford basis.
Community: our community projects celebrate the creativity and capability of local young people, supporting skill development and providing them with opportunities to perform and create art. These projects, such as Circus of Lights (Craigmillar 2018), Anti-Gravity Circus (Craigmillar 2019) and Circus from the Sea (Leith 2019) all culminated in community events where young people displayed their new creations, including an evening light parade, a decorated bicycle peloton, and a mini-circus festival.
