Marnie Russell

Based in Glasgow, I am a writer, actor and tutor with a musical theatre background. I graduated in 2020 with a first-class MA in English Literature and Theatre Studies from the University of Glasgow alongside numerous hospitality jobs. During my time at university, I co-delivered drama-based workshops with Fast Forward Ltd. and was a member of the Citizens Theatre Young Co. (2017-2018) with whom I toured ‘FINE’, an original TIE production. I have also worked with Student Theatre At Glasgow as an assistant director, writer, deviser and co-director.

I spent a year studying playwriting at Boston College where I also performed the role of Ophelia in ‘Hamlet’ among other credits. After returning to Scotland, I joined Theatre Studio Glasgow as an assistant director and choreographer for their 2019 pantomime ‘Cinderella’. I have since worked as a drama, musical theatre and dramatic writing tutor at Theatre Studio and will be joining their agency as an agent’s assistant.

Over the last two years, I have performed with Hopscotch Films (‘Trifle’) and Live Witness Theatre (‘30/40’, ‘Pillowtalk’) and recently took on a producer role for LWT’s virtual reality project ‘Upstream’. At the beginning of 2021, I co-founded False Start Productions with Jennifer Galt after writing and producing a digital pantomime (‘Putting On A Panto!’) over the Christmas period. Jennifer and I wrote, filmed, produced and performed in ‘Eat Worms’ with Scottish Youth Theatre’s ‘Making Space’ festival under the mentorship of Gemma Nicol (Wonder Fools, Hidden Route). 'Eat Worms' is a six-part episodic piece that is currently under review for future development. False Start is committed to exploring the nuances of theatricality and innovative theatrical forms, particularly multi-media episodic structures. Our most recent project - 'returning (the act of)' - will showcase multi-media work from 19 different emerging artists around Scotland and England, produced in response to creative writing prompts written by myself.

Most recently, both Jennifer and I showcased new writing with the Traverse Young Writers group as individual artists. I have also started voluntary work as a casting director for Intravenous Productions and am writing a television pilot. I am currently being mentored by Gemma Nicol.
