James Steel
James Steel is a producer and general manager specialising in the development and delivery of new musical theatre. His work spans London, New York, Korea, and international markets, with a particular focus on originating ambitious new work and supporting international productions transferring into the UK.
His producing and general management credits include USHERS: The Front of House Musical (The Other Palace, Arts Theatre, Charing Cross Theatre, The Hope Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe) the Korean musical Breaking the Quill (The Other Palace) support by the Korean Movement (Korean Arts Management) Fly More Than You Fall starring Tony-nominated Keala Settle; Smalltown Boy the Musical (Soho Place); Daniel’s Husband (Marylebone Theatre); Spells of the Sea from the Kennedy Center; and Maya. His projects are characterised by a balance of creative risk, commercial clarity, and international collaboration.
Alongside his producing work, James is an active investor in new musical theatre. He has supported female led projects including Fangirls London, produced by Sonia Friedman, and Unfortunate. He is also committed to supporting emerging writers and creative talent. In 2025, James Steel Productions established a bursary scheme at the BML (Book, Music, Lyrics) supporting four emerging musical theatre writers. James has also served as a judge on the Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer Scheme, contributing to the selection of the resident composer placement at the National Theatre of Scotland.
James began his career in ticketing and sales, serving as Ticketing Manager at the Roundhouse, Camden, where he oversaw major international productions including Fuerza Bruta and Fashion Freak Show. In the West End, he worked on Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and the London launch of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This commercial foundation informs his data-led approach to producing, pricing, and audience development.
His work has been consistently supported by Stage One, including the West End Workshop, Stage One Bursary, Stage Two, Commercial Investment, and the NYC Exchange with Columbia University.
