The Scottish Society of Playwrights rates for the Commissioning of a Play

At their AGM in November 2024, Scottish Society of Playwrights (SSP) members voted to approve an increase in rates, effective from April 2025. This is the first formal uplift in writers’ fees implemented by SSP in 5 years and increases are being applied across all of their agreements. The rates that will be of interest to FST members who use the FST/SSP Contract are:

Scottish Play Commission Rates April 2025:

  • Up to 15 mins £2,050
  • Up to 30 mins £4,100
  • Up to 60 mins £6,150
  • Up to 90 mins £8,200
  • Over 90 mins £10,250

Although FST does not have a formal role in negotiation of fees and rates of pay, we will continue to promote these to members and advocate for adherence to guidelines on pay and conditions as part of our Fair Work commitments. We know that many of our members have already been voluntarily uplifting fees, regularly exceed minimum standards and continually aim for best practice in line with a number of agreements in operation across the UK.  FST continues to liaise with SSP on suggestions for revisions to the writer’s agreement, to reflect changes to the ways in which work for the stage is now commissioned, developed and produced. The updated version of the agreement will be uploaded to FST’s website as soon as the process is completed.
